The Ashokan Rail Trail Wins Big in Chronogram’s 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards

Great news for trail lovers in the Hudson Valley: the Ashokan Rail Trail has taken the top spot in two categories in Chronogram’s 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards: #1 Bike Trail and #1 Rail Trail.

This recognition, voted on by Chronogram readers across the region, reflects what so many of us already know: the Ashokan Rail Trail ranks among the most beloved outdoor destinations in the Hudson Valley. With over 140,000 visits per year and more than $5 million in net new spending generated annually in surrounding communities, the trail has proven to be both a recreational gem and a genuine community asset.

At the Woodstock Land Conservancy, we’re proud to have supported the creation of the Ashokan Rail Trail and to be advocating now for its extension. The KAT campaign is working to connect the existing trail 1.7 miles further to Route 28A—bringing us one giant step closer to a continuous trail corridor all the way to Kingston.

This award is a timely reminder of what’s at stake. The Ulster County Legislature is expected to make a policy decision on the undesignated section of the corridor later this summer. When they do, we’ll be asking trail supporters to show up and make their voices heard.

In the meantime, congratulations to everyone who uses, loves, and advocates for the Ashokan Rail Trail. This one’s for you.
