Woodstock’s Environmental Commission Supports Trail Connectivity

The Woodstock Environmental Commission sent a letter to the Woodstock Town Board, the Ulster County Trails Advisory Committee and the Ulster County Legislature urging support for “a trail-only policy” along the undesignated section of the U&D Corridor “as the only environmentally sound way to achieve the benefits of trail connectivity.”

The letter, which was passed unanimously by the WEC in December, summarizes the benefits of connecting the Ashokan Rail Trail to larger trail networks across the state while warning of the environmental damage that would be the result of attempting to provide rail-plus-trail in the narrow areas of the undesignated section. It also notes the Town of Woodstock’s support for trail connectivity, which was clearly stated in an April 2024 resolution.

“We support a trail-only designation as the only feasible way to give Ulster County residents the benefits of a connected trail system” the letter concludes. We agree.
